The institution
Overview
Small upstairs observatory-like distance school. Reserved dry wit, long-limbed counter craft, decisive choices and honest speech; not a retreat from competition.
History
Ivo Rook first rented two rooms for individual footwork teaching while earning his living editing technical translations. A cooperative landlord later offered the adjoining print floor, allowing a reinforced ring and accessible lift to be installed. Ivo owns the business and leases the premises; a public access covenant keeps its evening community class separate from professional camps. The observatory comparison comes from the high windows and sightline markings, not a claim of scientific magic. The club stays small because watching a decision properly takes time. Its mixed international stable shares distance questions rather than a nationality, and its two heavyweights can disagree without being written as automatic enemies.
Ownership
Independent business owned by Ivo; long lease from a local building cooperative. No WCBC ownership.
Location
Fictional adapted upper-floor map-printing rooms in Edinburgh, with a proper lift, reinforced ring floor and high windows.
Identity
Map-blue floor lines, chalk annotations and long amber window shadows. Nothing suggests a mystical retreat.
Reputation
A respected long-range school accused, sometimes fairly, of overvaluing patience.
Philosophy
Distance creates options; it should not become a refuge from making a choice.
Training specialities
Long jabs, rangy southpaw counters, lateral exits and deliberate rhythm disruption.
Training approach
Identify a usable opening before it is perfect; keep a second exit but finish the first decision.
Daily routine
- Individual check-in with one spoken objective.
- Range finding and footwork without punches.
- Matched counter rounds with a fixed decision deadline.
- Review one committed action, then a genuine end to the session.
Atmosphere
Dry jokes, long pauses and sudden decisive movement. Quiet fighters feel welcome without being romanticised as unknowable.
Facilities
Modest investment concentrated on safe structure, light and access. Clean changing rooms, compact shower block and private review nook.
Equipment
Sliding distance markers, mirror shutters, target poles, adjustable long bags and conventional pads; no contact between drastically different sizes.
Communal spaces
Window-seat library, large kettle and an open sketch table. Silence is permitted; avoiding every difficult conversation is not.
Travel and camps
Scottish athletes attend regularly; German, Irish, Russian and Moroccan members use planned Edinburgh camps with individual home-time and visa arrangements subject to approval.

Friendly dispute over the moment to commit
Ivo Rook and Vera Švec respect one another's counter craft. Their proposed disagreement is whether a fighter should simplify a problem early or tolerate ambiguity until the opponent reveals enough. The argument becomes useful because both stables contain gifted overthinkers.
Proposed narrative
A proposed remote film seminar gives Magnus and Rodrigo the same publicly available passage to analyse. Magnus wants to wait for an unmistakable opening; Rodrigo sees six possible answers. Ivo and Vera each set a deadline, then discover that their apparently different exercises are asking the same question. Cormac quietly supplies the shortest explanation in the room and immediately regrets attracting attention.
Quiet friendship that makes room for dissent
Ivo and Jun can enjoy an entire film without speaking, but neither wants silence mistaken for agreement. A proposed film correspondence connects Longview's distant observers with Lantern House's compact counter specialists.
Proposed narrative
At a proposed shared screening, Haruto politely accepts the first interpretation offered, while Hamish hides his disagreement inside a joke. Jun and Ivo make each man describe one specific thing he saw. The useful conflict is not loud; it is whether a considerate person can disagree without assuming he has damaged a relationship.
