Biography
Harlan began coaching evening sessions while working night shifts maintaining railway electrical systems. He came to value a clear handover and a useful explanation more than the person who delivered the loudest speech. Over years of preparing travelling boxers, he developed an independent corner practice built on doing the agreed job and leaving permanent gym relationships intact. He repairs worn equipment, brings tea in a battered flask and remembers the names of venue cleaners. He dislikes heroic stories about himself because they hide the ordinary work he values.
Personality
- Blunt
- Observant
- Demanding
- Practical rather than demonstrative
Corner approach
Asks the boxer to name one felt problem, selects one actionable correction and gives one short demonstration. He coordinates the team’s voices; the technical assistant contributes observations and the cutman owns cut-care communication within his role.
Specialities
- Bout-specific technical leadership
- Distance management and balanced exits
- Reducing complex observations to one useful interval instruction
Signature method
Folds a cream index card to show only the current task. For Kerem, his priority is retaining long-range control without turning pride into a refusal to reset.
Voice
Dry Newcastle English, low and gravelly; firm without exaggerated dialect.
Mannerisms
Turns his watch face inward while listening and straightens a folded index card before speaking.
Strengths
Clear decisions under pressure, practical preparation and respect for a fighter’s established identity.
Flaw
Can mistake a changing situation for a failure to execute his plan; his first response is sometimes to become more rigid.
Appearance
Mature liver-and-roan wirehaired Pointer, grizzled beard, heavy expressive brows, dark hazel eyes and naturally dropped ears. Wiry, sturdy upright build with a modest middle-aged waist; weathered face, no exaggerated fighting musculature.
Professional attire
Charcoal short-sleeved corner shirt, slate trousers, black trainers and a plain watch. Small folded cream index card and battered dark tea flask. No boxing gloves, medals, gym insignia or championship belt.
Relationships
Lukas Weiss
Lukas remains Kerem’s technical coach; Harlan invites his observations and holds the bout-specific chief-second responsibility.
Gus “Steady Hands” Bellamy
Works with Gus in Kerem’s corner, trusting his calm without adding a second tactical speech.
Petra Voss
Respects Petra’s permanent head-coach role and total recusal from this contest; no back-channel requests.
Santiago “Santi” Valdés
Professional stylistic tension: Harlan distrusts abundant explanation, Santi dislikes his abruptness. No shared camps, footage or tactics.
