Biography
Proposed background: Malik taught practical design and coached competitive amateurs before moving into professional boxing as a technical assistant. He spent several years designing footwork sessions, preparing sparring tasks and learning to give a definite corner instruction when there was no time for another interesting option. Fieldwork became his first independent head programme, supported by a collective of people who expected a useful answer as well as an interesting question. He is the least institutionally established of the twenty heads, which explains both his fresh teaching voice and his tendency to seek another clever solution before setting a firm limit.
Personality
Curious, encouraging and genuinely delighted by a new solution. His wish to support everyone can make a necessary firm stop feel unkind to him.
Coaching philosophy
The learner must understand, try and finish. Encouragement is useful only when it helps a person face the task in front of them.
Specialities
Variable jab patterns, lateral exits, patient entries at speed and repeatable footwork decisions.
Signature methods
A yellow completion card stays visible until the basic task is done; only then can the athlete test a new variation. The review requires one honest problem before a bright next idea.
Corner behaviour
“This one. Finish outside. Tell me you have it.” His normal curiosity becomes a firm short instruction when there is no time for another option.
Sparring behaviour
Malik encourages experiment within the agreed task and stops novelty that has replaced it. He checks the quiet athlete as carefully as the enthusiastic one and keeps contact size-matched.
Fighter relationships
Timur and Liam get bounded novelty, Blake practises useful imperfection and Freja is told that other adults can own their mistakes.
Strengths
Learning design, adaptable footwork, warm collaboration and accessible explanations.
Flaws
May offer another option instead of setting a boundary; sometimes reassures before he has fully heard a concern.
Appearance
Black-and-tan Australian Kelpie with a narrow expressive muzzle, natural upright ears and an agile frame; a few early grey hairs at the jaw.
Professional attire
Eucalyptus overshirt, warm grey tee, yellow timer strap and ordinary flat trainers; often carries a stack of task cards.
